The World Air Quality project might look like one of those big projects coming from big organizations... but it is actually just a small team of volunteers behind this project.
Our real motivation is to see the daily impact on the world citizens. One of the users told us one day that "worse than disinformation is the lack of information: I did not know that pollution was so bad". That makes us proud to give this free information and promote pollution awareness 🙏.
We need help to get this project continue growing. If you would like to contribute to the World Air Quality Index project, send us a message, and let's together promote air pollution awareness and drive our little planet towards a pollution free planet 🙏.
How can I help?
The World Air Quality Index project might look big, but it is actually a small but motivated team behind it. There are still many things that the project team want to achieve:
If you do not have time to contribute, but still would like to help and support our project, what about getting one of our cool GAIA air quality monitoring station? ☀️💨👌

About our funding
The World Air Quality project might look like one of those big projects coming from organizations like the UN, ADB or WRI, but it is actually just a small team behind it.
Yet, despite our extensive outreach, our project has never received any financial support from such organizations, wether they are NGOs or governments.
The income comes from online advertising, as well as our GAIA air quality monitoring stations, but it is just enough to pay for the cloud infrastructure.
However, we are working on getting funding for the recruitment of a team dedicated to supporting and enhancing the air quality data platform.
If you would like to support us financially, check out the donate page.
Our GAIA air quality monitors are very easy to set up: You only need a WIFI access point and a USB compatible power supply.
Once connected, your real time air pollution levels are instantaneously available on the maps and through the API.
The station comes with a 10-meter water-proof power cable, a USB power supply, mounting equipment and an optional solar panel.
The table below defines the Air Quality Index scale as defined by the US-EPA 2016 standard:
AQI | Air Pollution Level | Health Implications | Cautionary Statement (for PM2.5) |
0 - 50 | Good | Air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk | None |
51 -100 | Moderate | Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. | Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. |
101-150 | Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups | Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is not likely to be affected. | Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. |
151-200 | Unhealthy | Everyone may begin to experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects | Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should avoid prolonged outdoor exertion; everyone else, especially children, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion |
201-300 | Very Unhealthy | Health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is more likely to be affected. | Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should avoid all outdoor exertion; everyone else, especially children, should limit outdoor exertion. |
300+ | Hazardous | Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects | Everyone should avoid all outdoor exertion |
