Special Bush Fires announcementNews (January 9th): ACT Health Protection Service is now publishing the hourly data for PM2.5 and PM10.
Any new readings starting from Janurary 9th 2020 8PM will be reported using the hourly data.
Please note that the Air Pollutant Index reported by ACT (and NSW) is based on 24 hours PM2.5 and PM10 averages. This can make it really difficult to find out what the actual air quality is in real time. The best practice is to report real-time air quality using hourly data, which is what most EPA worldwide do.For instance, during a period of Haze, where the Air Quality Index can deteriorate significantly and fast, the published Air Pollution index is most likely lower than the actual pollution. Similarly, when the air polution decreases, the Air Quality Index can still be very high although the pollution is gone.Read more here.
Also, note that the Air Quality scale used on aqicn.org is based on the US EPA scale.
This can explain why you can see different values from the ACT website - Read more here.
